los acentos con Microsoft Word
The following list shows how you can make Spanish characters in Microsoft word. Using the ALT key and the number pad to form accents does work in Micrsoft Word, but it's much easier to form accents using the keystrokes below as you don't need to memorize numbers to form the desired character.

how to assign codes to certain characters
The above keystrokes don't necessarily have to be the "code" for forming these characters. For example, I feel that it's too troublesome to have to type Alt + Ctrl + ! to get a ¡. So what I do is, in Microsoft Word, I go up to Insert, Symbol, then I find the ¡ (you might need to select (normal text) from the drop-down box) and then I choose "Shortcut Key..." at the bottom. This opens a new window in which you can change the shortcut key for forming a particular symbol. Since I like the Ctrl + ' a lot (cause it's easy), I want to make the new shortcut having those keys in the code. So where it says "Press new shortcut key:" I do the new code as if I were making the letter: Ctrl + ', 1. Then I choose "Assign" at the bottom. Now I have a much easier way to quickly insert the ¡.
